The Veneer Process: What to Expect
Cosmetic dentistry can be expensive, especially if you need multiple procedures done. If your teeth are cracked, crooked, misshapen, or discolored, veneers can help you achieve a picture-perfect smile with less time and money and fewer recovery days.
At the dental practice of Dr. Padmaja Yalamanchili in Fairfax, Virginia, you can get gorgeous porcelain veneers that deliver an even, white, and happy smile. If you’re a good candidate for veneers, this could provide a fast, easy solution for your smile that can last for years with proper care.
The veneer process
Dental veneer application is a relatively simple process that can be completed much more quickly than a full mouth reconstruction or orthodontic treatment. Veneers typically require three stages: the consultation, preparation, application.
During your consultation, Dr. Yalamanchili will evaluate your teeth and discuss your goals with you. Every set of veneers is customized to your preferences, so a model will be made to help you visualize your new smile. Once you’re confident in your decisions, the real work can begin.
First, your teeth are prepped. This requires shaving away a tiny, tiny layer of enamel, which makes room for the paper-thin veneers to lay flush with your teeth. Then, Dr. Yalamanchili will take a mold of your mouth for the fabrication of your permanent veneers, and place a set of temporary veneers to protect your teeth.
We’ll send the molds off to a lab where your permanent veneers will be fabricated to fit perfectly over the front faces of your teeth. We want them to be exactly the right size, color, and fit. Once they’re ready, you can head back to our office for your final visit. Dr. Yalamanchili will carefully position and affix your veneers in place using a strong bonding solution, and your smile will be complete.
What to expect from veneers
Once Dr. Yalamanchili places your veneers, you’re ready to go. They don’t require any additional dental care, so all you need to do is maintain your normal dental hygiene. Porcelain veneers also resist stains, so you don’t have to worry about them becoming discolored over time.
Avoid biting into hard foods like candy or ice, and never use your teeth as tools to open packages. This could cause your veneers to chip, which would require replacement. However, with proper care and maintenance, veneers can last anywhere from 10-30 years.
